Day 11 Andrew finishes

Day 11 Kenny left Aberdeen setting his sights on Prince Albert. The wind came up early and hit Kenny head on for the whole day. Kenny had ridden 20 hours the previous day and was looking at another 20-hour day today. Kenny’s bike has been giving him problems since he was knocked off the bike by the wind in Lesotho and the roof fell on him. Kenny managed to get into Prince Albert at 01h30 where Johann Rissik well known to endurance riders spent a couple of hours sorting out Kenny’s bike so that he could carry on.
After a couple of hours sleep Kenny left to climb the Swartburg Pass and headed into mist and cold conditions on the Pass. Remember Limpopo 49C? On the Pass the temperature had dropped to 5C. Kenny headed off to Calitzdorp and arrived late last night after taking the long way round. When you’re tiered it’s easy to turn right instead of left and in the dark it’s even harder. Luckily it only added another 10 kms to Kenny’s journey.
The boys had made it to Barrydale and holed up in a B&B for the night deciding on another early start. They awoke to a wet and cold morning and combined with the head wind it made their journey to Montague miserable. They had to wait until 07h45 for the breakfast buffet to open, which is not to be missed for the hungry cyclist at the Montague Hotel.
Andrew and Colin made quick work of the road to Worcester but the day was taking its toll on Colin and at the Bain’s Pass turn off Andrew and Colin decided to separate as Andrew has to be in KZN on Saturday. Both riders summited Bain’s with in 30 minutes of each other. Colin decided the delights of Wellington were to inviting to miss and stayed at Wellington for the night.
Andrew stormed to the finish getting to Eden on the Bay at 20H08. Placing 2nd in the race and finishing with a time of 11 days 15 hours and 25 minutes. Steffen presented Andrews well-earned trophy and then everyone retired for a few beers.
Colin will arrive at Eden today and Kenny will either do the 452 km push to the finish or cycle part of the way and arrive on Saturday. The lantern Rouge awaits.
